Owls

One of my favourite non-sciencey/skeptical blogs is James Gurney's. (The guy who came up with the 'Dinotopia' books) I honestly learn more technical drawing stuff on his blog than I do at college. We've never learned about anything like this, or done any lessons like these. Not that i'm complaining about the course i'm on at the moment! I love it! I just wish it was maybe a tad more technical and academic... Though we are going to be making our own printing presses soon which will be awesome! I'll probably blog about that when it's underway.

Anyway, He's currently blogging a lot about various art colleges in America, and showcasing some of the drawings they've produced. So with this in mind, i feel inspired to show off my own drawings from my previous drawing project.
I'll admit they're all done from photographs, which is a lot easier than drawing from an actual object, but we did spend a whole 4 days, 10am-4pm, drawing from bits of trees and plants to warm-up our observational and sketching skills before moving on to our photos (I used some of the owl pics from xmas) Here's a taster:

The first one is one of several that I made using masking tape as a structure to sketch on top of. The tape certainly managed to compliment the owl's wing feathers and just the general shape of the owl. All the scrap tape from this project which i made into a large ball also proved inspirational for part of my next project...

Tomorrow i'm off to London to hopefully grab the Darwin exhibit and just soak up the atmosphere of the place. I might write up about it if i can be bothered. It might help with the non-tape based part of my next projects... watch this space!
(I would have posted this earlier, but A: I'm lazy, B: Busy with work, C: Family happenings have happened)
